History
Founded in 1841, The Agricultural Society of Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties is one of the oldest agricultural societies in the United States. The Society held its first fair in 1842, with early events taking place on vacant lots and members’ farms before establishing permanent grounds in Mineola in 1866. The original fairgrounds featured livestock barns, exhibition buildings, and a grand Exhibition Hall that showcased agricultural, horticultural, and domestic arts displays. The fair was held annually as the Queens County Fair until 1899, when the creation of Nassau County prompted its renaming as the Mineola Fair.
As development transformed the region, the fair relocated to Roosevelt Raceway and remained there until 1970. That year, it moved to Old Bethpage Village Restoration and became known as the Long Island Fair. The current fairgrounds were designed to reflect the original Mineola site and include the restored Superintendents’ Office, the only surviving 19th-century building from the original fairgrounds. More than 180 years after its founding, the Long Island Fair remains a cherished tradition celebrating the agricultural heritage and community spirit of Long Island.
